PLU graduate wins Miss Pierce County

Alumna Elizabeth Lamb-Ferro was crowned Miss Pierce County and will continue to the state pageant. Lamb-Ferro is using her work with the American Cancer Society’s annual Relay for Life as a pageant platform. This year’s second runner-up at the Miss America pageant, PLU senior Elyse Umemoto, made an appearance and sang at Miss Pierce County.

Poet or rock star?

Poet Mary Oliver, winner of the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award, will come to PLU in celebration of Earth Day. Oliver’s recent appearance at Benaroya Hall sparked the fastest sellout in the 20-year history of Seattle Arts & Lectures.

New community event to launch movement for Africa

Melannie Denise Cunningham, associate director of admission and coordinator of multi-cultural recruitment, organized “A Community Conversation –Why Africa Matters.” The event encouraged awareness about the need for unity among the people of Africa and the United States and raised funds for a group of orphan children in Kenya. In addition, student David Akuien spoke about his experience as a “Lost Boy of Sudan.”

Multiracial perspectives

Student Elyse Umemoto, Miss Washington and second runner-up in the Miss America pageant, shares her experience as a biracial person. Umemoto is of German, Japanese, Hispanic, and Yakama Indian descent. Her experience growing up in Wapato, a small town in the Yakima Valley, was important to her understanding of diversity. Celebrating diversity was a part of her school curriculum and the focus of an annual Cultural Unity Fair in her community.

Students, neighbors, pastor join weekly columnist ranks

Senior Jill Russell, print journalism major and editorial columnist for The Mast, is a guest columnist for The News Tribune. Russell will write her columns from London where she is participating in a study-abroad program, and she promises to offer the perspective of a “biracial, college-age woman.”

Puget Sound colleges come together to set sustainable goals

At the South Sound Sustainability conference, Puget Sound higher education institutions set goals to be more environmentally friendly. In particular, PLU promised to start an awareness campaign to educate students and faculty about sustainable practices.

PLU’s global health symposium, “Advances in Global Health by Non-Governmental Organizations,” showcased the efforts of Non-Governmental Organizations to respond to global health concerns through on-site intervention, research, and the formulation of public policy.

A failure to communicate? Washington state colleges try to adapt

Communication programs at universities in Washington State are adapting to the needs of a changing industry. Ken Robertson, executive editor of the Tri-City Herald and head of the Pacific Northwest Newspaper Association, praises the communication majors he has encountered from PLU and other universities in the state.

Franklin Pierce wants new facility for preschoolers

The Franklin Pierce School District has submitted a $78.5 million bond request to voters, with a portion of the funds used to build the Franklin Pierce Community Hope Center. The center would house preschool and teen programs, community offices and meeting rooms. Currently, the district rents space for its preschool in the old Parkland School building owned by PLU. PLU is considering redeveloping the facility in the future.
