July 14, 2009
KPLU wins two SPJ Awards
In May 2009, the station received two regional Excellence in Journalism Awards from the Society of Professional Journalists: in the Feature News category for KPLU Law and Justice reporter Paula Wissel’s story, “Cashing In on the Housing Crisis”; and in the Documentary category for Chana Joffe-Walt’s story, “Remembering Rose Hill.”
In August 2009, KPLU will be awarded the 2008 Sigma Delta Chi Award for Public Service in Radio Journalism, marking the first time KPLU has won a national SPJ award.
KPLU wins two PRNDI Awards
Most recently (June 13), KPLU picked up two national awards from Public Radio News Directors Incorporated (PRDNI) during its annual conference in Portland, Oregon. In the Series category, first place went to KPLU’s “Best of The Meaning of Work – 2008,” which included a number of segments that were broadcast in 2008 as part of the station’s 36-part series that aired between fall 2007 and spring 2008.
“The Meaning of Work” was helmed and edited by Paula Wissel; the series highlighted people from all walks of life talking about their jobs and reflecting on their hopes and dreams in relation to what they do for a living. (“The Meaning of Work” garnered two regional Edward R. Murrow awards in 2008.) In the Soft Feature category, KPLU’s Chana Joffe-Walt won second place for her piece entitled, “Historic Hat Store Looks to Change,” profiling Byrnie Utz’s hat shop that has been a fixture in downtown Seattle since 1934.
Liam Moriarty is awarded the 2009 EU Northwest Journalist Fellowship
KPLU is proud to announce Environment reporter Liam Moriarty has received the 2009 EU Northwest Journalist Fellowship, awarded by the European Union Center at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Affairs at the University of Washington. Moriarty is the very first recipient of the week-long Fellowship, which will take him to Brussels this July.
He will be conducting interviews and research for a three-part series examining what Europe is doing in three major areas of environmental policy – climate change, recycling and resource consumption, and transportation – comparing and contrasting his findings with what’s happening in the Pacific Northwest and Washington State. The series will air on KPLU in fall 2009. Moriarty’s approach will be along the same lines as his award-winning 2006 series, “The French Connection,” in which he compared how Washington State and France approach educational issues.
"Liam's upcoming series – comparing environmental practices in Europe with those in the Pacific Northwest – will allow KPLU to offer international context and perspective on issues that deeply matter to our audience, including transportation, greenhouse gases, and recycling and consumption,” says KPLU News Director Erin Hennessey. “We're thrilled he has been given this opportunity!"
