Senior Lute wins national honor
May 18, 2009

PLU senior Nate Hulings is going out with a bang – placing in first in the National SPJ results.
As the president for PLU’s student chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ), Hulings led the group to a very successful showing at the Region 10 Mark of Excellence Awards earlier this year in Missoula, Montana.
At the regional level, Hulings won not one, but two first place awards for Online Reporting. Additional PLU award winners were Morgan Root, Ted Charles and KCNS.
All of the nation’s first place winners at the 12 different regional competitions advanced to the next level and were in the running for the National Mark of Excellence Awards.
At the national level, the Mark of Excellence Awards recognize the best of the best in collegiate work published or broadcast in 2008. According to SPJ, there were more than 3,600 entries in 39 categories this year.
Hulings had two entries in this year’s competition: one in the “Online Opinion and Commentary” category, and one in the “Online Feature Reporting” category.
SPJ released the results on May 13. While Hulings did not place in the “Online Feature Reporting” category, his name can now be found at the top of the list in the “Online Opinion and Commentary” category.
All of the national winners will be recognized on Fri, Aug. 28 at the Mark of Excellence Luncheon in Indianapolis. The luncheon takes place annually at the SPJ Convention & National Journalism Conference.
Hulings’ work can be found on PLU Webnews HERE.
