PLU launches Summer Job Initiative

The summer time isn’t just a fun getaway for many college students. It’s also a time to work and save up money to help pay for school.

But this summer is a little different than the past few ones. The jobs that were there last year may not be there this year. PLU wants to do its part in making sure at least a few students have jobs this summer with its Summer Job Initiative.

For the 2009 summer, PLU is adding 20 new student work positions - 10 in the Development Operations and 10 in Facilities Management. For Development Operations students will play a vital part in updating database information and for Facilities Management students will help complete needed painting projects.

“The Summer Jobs Initiative will be a win/win for PLU students and for the university,” said Steve Olson, Vice-President for Development and University Relations Development. “The initiative will provide some students the opportunity for summer employment so they can continue to finance their educations.

“At the same time, these jobs will help accomplish some very important projects for the university. Many of the students will be updating information in our database system, such as e-mail addresses and other contact information. This in turn will cut down on the amount of paper mailing and allow us to be in better touch with our alumni and friends.

“Other students will be working on needed painting projects around the campus.”

Already there is a buzz about the job opportunities based on a high number of applications that have already been received, Olson said.
