PLU recognized as top green power purchaser

April 27, 2009

The Environmental Protection Agency recently recognized PLU as the 2008-2009 Individual Conference Champion for purchasing more green power than any other school in the Northwest Conference.

PLU made significant Green Power purchases to off-set energy consumption for the entire campus. Out of a total of 16,472,660 kilowatt-hours used, the university purchased 7,764,660 kilowatt-hours of green power. That’s nearly 50 percent of the school’s energy consumption.

The EPA estimates that PLU’s purchase of nearly 8 million kilowatt-hours of green power is the equivalent amount of electricity needed to power nearly 800 average American homes each year or has the equivalent impact of reducing the CO2 emissions of more than 1,000 passenger cars annually.

“Each year our college and university Green Power Partners raise the bar for clean, renewable energy use,” said EPA Administrator Lisa P. Jackson. “By taking action on its campus, Pacific Lutheran University is helping to move our nation into a clean energy future.”

The College & University Green Power Challenge Championship, a part of EPA’s Green Power Partnership, tracks green power purchasing by colleges and universities across collegiate athletic conferences. By purchasing green power universities reduce the environmental impact associated with conventional electricity use.
