Earth Week

An Earth Day discussion of religion, spirituality and the environment in the Pacific Northwest will feature a panel of contributors from the recently published book “Cascadia, The Elusive Utopia: Exploring the Spirit of the Pacific Northwest.”

The experts on religion, sociology, environmental studies, history and nonprofit leadership will appear from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m on Wednesday, April 22, at the Columbia Center on the campus of Pacific Lutheran University.

The event is free and open to the public. Advance registration is required. E-mail provost@plu.edu with “Cascadia” in the subject line to register and receive a guest parking pass and a campus map.

Join contributors to the recently published volume “Cascadia, The Elusive Utopia: Exploring the Spirit of the Pacific Northwest” (Ronsdale Press 2008) for a day-long conference exploring the promise and perils of the dream of Cascadia.

Engage in discussion with the presenters around the interrelationships of religion, spirituality and the environment in our region and how these affect the mobilization of people and communities toward building a better future. Consider:

What is the relationship of the dream of Cascadia to spirituality and religion?

What differences do low levels of institutional religious affiliation and energetic individual spiritual searching make to the health of communities in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia?

How distinctive is this region?

Is the Pacific Northwest nurturing a unique spirituality of place, which could become a model for the planet?

Does the dream of Cascadia delude as well as inspire?

The event is sponsored by Center for the Study of Religion, Cultures, and Society in the Western United States at Pacific Lutheran University.

Event Schedule:

9:30 a.m. — Welcome and Introductions
