Nordic Film Series

March 16, 2009

PLU’s Scandinavian Area Studies Program and Scandinavian Cultural Center are pleased to announce a few upcoming films for this year’s Nordic Film Series.

Next up is “Man Without A Past” starting at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 5 in the Scandinavian Cultural Center of the UC.

The screenings are free and open to the public.

The film will be introduced by Troy Storfjell, of the Division of Humanities. There will be a brief discussion following the screening.

“Man Without A Past” is one of the more upbeat films by internationally renowned Finnish oddball director Aki Kaurismäki. The film tells the story of a welder who develops amnesia when he is mugged on his arrival in Helsinki. With no knowledge of his past, the protagonist is forced to construct an identity form scratch, living among the outcasts in a shipping container community by the harbor. A pointed commentary on globalization, this postmodern parable highlights the decency of the have-nots and their invisibility to most in the larger society.

The film is in Finnish with English subtitles and runs 97 minutes.

The Nordic Film Series continues with the film “Hunger.”

“Hunger” starts at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 19 in the Scandinavian Cultural Center of the UC.

The film will be introduced by Claudia Berguson, of the Division of Humanities. There will be a sort discussion following the screening.

“Hunger” is based on the Nobel Prize-winning Norwegian author Knut Hamsun’s novel of the same name. It tells the story of a starving writer as he struggles to make a living, and to write, in late nineteenth century Christiania (Oslo). Per Oscarsson won the award for best actor at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival for his tormented performance in the main role.

The film is in Norwegian, Swedish and Danish with English subtitles. It runs 112 minutes.
