Film Festival Series: Alltid fremmed and Vinterland

March 06, 2009

As part of Pacific Lutheran University’s Department of Languages and Literature 2008-2009 Film Festival Series, The Norwegian films “Alltid fremmed” (Eternally Aliens) and “Vinterland” (Winterland) will be presented at 6 p.m., Friday, April 3 room 100 in Ingram Hall at PLU.

The showings are free and open to the public.

“Alltid fremmed” is a 26-minute documentary by Hisham al-Zouji that portrays the lives of immigrant youth in two European countries – France and Norway. Violence and illegal activity have become part of everyday life and the search for identity can quickly take a dangerous turn.

“Vinterland” by Hisham Zaman follows in the tradition of his prize-winning short film “Bawke” by capturing personal dilemmas appearing in people on the run.

In “Winterland,” he depicts the story of Renas, a well-adjusted Kurdish refugee who lives in a godforsaken spot in Northern Norway. He has everything he wants, but he misses a woman. He marries a woman from his home country that he has never seen, after having arranged a wedding in Iraq with a substitute bridegroom. But the marriage has a difficult start when Fermesk arrives in Norway. Neither her husband nor the country appears the way she had imagined. And is it possible for Renas to love a woman he has only seen in a photo?"

These films are presented in conjunction with Norwegian 102, 202 and 302.
