Professor to discuss empowering war-affected girl mothers

February 26, 2009

Professor Susan McKay from the University of Wyoming will be discussing her research into developing programs to empower war-affected girl mothers Thursday, March 5 at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Wash.

The lecture will take place from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Nordquist Lecture Hall (Xavier 201).

McKay’s visit is part of PLU’s recognition of International Women’s Day. For nearly two decades, she has taught and researched issues focused on women and girls within armed conflicts. Her current research uses participatory research strategies to promote reintegration of formerly-abducted girl soldiers in Sierra Leone, Liberia and northern Uganda. The issues and challenges these girl-mothers face are often overlooked by programs addressing the reintegration of boy soldiers.

Since 2004, McKay has been working to develop innovative, systematic opportunities to engage girl-mothers in reflection, analysis and action to address the conditions of their own lives, the challenges they face and the resources already present in their communities that could improve their livelihoods and remove some of the stigma they and their children face.

During her lecture, McKay will offer insight into preliminary findings from her research team that includes girl-mothers from Sierra Leone, Liberia and northern Uganda. To find out more about McKay’s research go to http://www.uwyo.edu/girlmotherspar/

Along with her research, McKay has more than 75 books, book chapters and articles published. Her most recent book is “Where Are the Girls? Girls in Fighting Forces in Northern Uganda, Sierra Leone, and Mozambique, Their Lives During and After War” (2004).

This lecture is sponsored by the Associated Students of Pacific Lutheran University, Invisible Children United, Global Studies Program, Women’s and Gender Studies Program, Wang Center for International Programs, The Diversity Center, Office of the Dean of Social Sciences, Anthropology Department, Women’s Center and Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society.
