Historic piano presentation
February 26, 2009
On March 7th, Pacific Lutheran University will host “Christofori to Steinway, the Piano’s Tale” Edition Two at Lagerquist Concert Hall in the Mary Baker Russell building.
The program will take place beginning at 10 a.m. with a lecture/demonstration and continue from noon to 4 p.m. with instruments available for open play.
The presenters will be Edwin Good, author of Giraffes, Black Dragons, and Other Pianos and co-curator of the Piano 300 exhibit at the Smithsonian Museum, Michael Reiter, RPT, piano technician for Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Puget Sound, and Dave Davis, RPT.
The program will include a two-hour lecture/demonstration of the pianos present on the stage. Since we will have a limited time to discuss the history of the piano in general, we will concentrate on the history of the individual instruments on the stage and how they fit into the general history of the piano. The instruments will include a copy of the 1722 Christofori piano owned by Mr. Good. A 1789 Broadwood piano (not a replica) under the care of Mr. Reiter, a replica of the 1795 Mathias Heilmann, built by Adlam and Burnett, London and owned by UPS, an 1846 JB Streicher, owned by Mr. Reiter and an 1885 Henry F Miller pedal piano. The program is conceived to give teachers and students a history of the piano and more importantly what they sounded like. Appropriate literature will be played on each of the instruments by a number of performers from the universities. Attendees are invited to bring music to play on the instruments in the afternoon.
This event is sponsored by Sherman Clay Pianos, Pacific Lutheran University and the University of Puget Sound.
