Spring State Farm MBA Executive Leadership
February 17, 2009
This Spring PLU will host the State Farm MBA Executive Leadership Series featuring business leaders from around the world.
Students, alumni and friends of the community are invited to join PLU for an exciting series of speakers coming to PLU. The MBA program at PLU is fundamentally focused on developing dynamic leaders in the global business environment. Because of this, part of the mission of the School of Business is to bring to campus those who can share their experiences and expertise to help guide and shape the future leaders of our communities.
First up, Po Chung, the co-founder of DHL international Ltd. and Chairman Emeritus of DHL Express (Hong Kong) Ltd., will speak from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 in room 103 of the Morken Center at PLU.
Chung attended St. Stephen’s College in Hong Kong. In 1963, he pursued an interest in oceanography, attending the University of the Seven Seas, the first Semester at Sea program. In 1969 he obtained his BSc in Fisheries Management from Humboldt State University, California.
Chung returned to Hong Kong and worked for a toy company for two years. In 1972 he founded DHL International and remained as Chairman until 2001, following the acquisition of DHL by Deutsche Post World Net in 2000. Upon retiring, Chung joined The University of Hong Kong and taught Creativity and Entrepreneurship. He also pursued a Master of Fine Arts degree at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University.
Chung presently focuses on giving back by fostering entrepreneurship and education in the principles and personal characteristics required for truly successful entrepreneurship in our present times. To that end, in 2004, he spearheaded the creation of the Centre for Asian Entrepreneurship and Business Values (CASEBV) at The University of Hong Kong and has taught a course in Entrepreneurship in the years since.
In December 2008, Chung published his first book, “THE FIRST 10 YARDS – The 5 Dynamics of Entrepreneurship and how they made a difference at DHL and other successful startups,” a book for those who want to explore how to survive the “first ten yards” of a new company and continue to thrive.
