After touring through Iowa, Minnesota and North Dakota throughout the later part of January, PLU’s Choir of the West came back to present their Homecoming Concert. The performance took place on Feb. 6 in Lagerquist Concert Hall in the Mary Baker Russell Music.
Dr. Richard Nance, who is currently serving as the Director of Choral Activities, conducted the concert. Nance also conducts the University Singers and Choral Union. He has been a member of PLU’s music faculty since 1992. Outside the university, Nance is also a member of the American Choral Directors Association, and is currently the President-elect for the Northwestern division.
The Choir of the West was founded in 1925, the third nationally touring a cappella choir developed by a Lutheran University. They currently rehearse for 90 minutes, four days a week. Their extensive rehearsals have earned them the distinction of being considered one of the most outstanding college choral ensembles in the United States.
The choir also tours internationally every four years. In 2007, they toured with the University Symphony Orchestra to Bulgaria, Romania and Hungary. Past travels have taken them throughout Europe, Scandinavia, Japan and China.
The remainder of the choir’s concerts will be in Washington State, the majority of which will be at Lagerquist concert hall. Anyone wishing to receive more information may contact the PLU Music Department at 253-535-7787 or music@plu.edu.
