Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week at PLU

January 30, 2009

Pacific Lutheran University will be hosting a wide variety of hunger and homelessness awareness events during the week of Feb. 9-13. These events are designed to increase understanding among students and encourage them to provide help if they can.

Each day, there will be a different awareness event, along with a challenge for students and a “Flip Side,” a way to take action and help those in need.

Among the awareness events are the weeklong Box City in Red Square, a Hunger Banquet, a soup kitchen volunteer event, hunger and homelessness discussions, a candlelight vigil, and a special chapel on Friday, Feb. 13.

The challenges posed to students include talking to someone wearing a sandwich-board in Red Square, living off of just $3 for an entire day, spending one day without a coat or shoes, sleeping in Box City for one night, and signing up for River of Hunger in the Volunteer Center.

Each day will also provide students with an opportunity to help those in need. Donating canned food, donating time or money to a homeless shelter, donating clothes and shoes, blankets and warm socks and attending the River of Hunger Conference on either Friday or Saturday are some of the challenges posed throughout the week.

The River of Hunger event will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on Friday, Feb. 13 and at Pacific Lutheran University on Saturday, Feb. 14. The event will include a series of workshops and lectures, as well as a keynote address presented by ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson. The cost is $25 for adults and $15 for youth (grades 7-12).
