Wear red and support the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day

January 30, 2009

Every minute, heart disease claims the life of another woman.

National Wear Red Day is an opportunity for men and women of all ages to raise awareness about this statistic. On Feb. 6, 2009, put on something red and support the American Heart Association’s efforts to fight back against heart disease.

There will be a Go Red for Women Rally at South Hill Mall from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will have the opportunity to receive a health screening, talk with Dr. Uma Krishnan and hear Puyallup Mayor Don Malloy discuss his support of Go Red for Women.

Those in observance of National Wear Red Day may also donate $5 to the American Heart Association by texting the word RED to 90999. A one-time charge of $5 will be added to the donor’s phone bill, and $4.50 of the donation will go directly to the American Heart Association.

Through its Go Red for Women campaign, the American Heart Association strives to raise awareness about heart disease among women. In the past, a common misconception was that heart disease only affects men. In truth, heart disease is the number one killer of women in America, claiming more lives than the next five causes of death combined.
