14th annual Backyard Bird Count this February
January 12, 2009
PLU will host the 14th annual Audubon Backyard Bird Count starting at 9 a.m. Sunday, February 15.
The event is open to all ages and experience levels and is sponsored by the Tahoma Audubon Society and Cornell Lab of Ornithology.
The activity will include identifying and counting different birds around campus. The full citizen’s Audubon science project is an important contribution to creating an online database of types of birds in the area.
“The goal is helping scientists understand how the distribution and abundance of birds is changing through time,” said Julie Smith, PLU Biology Department. “It’s also an opportunity for kids to get outside and connect with nature.”
No registration is required for the event and participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and field guides. Some binoculars will be available for those that need them.
Those interested should meet by the Rieke Science Center facing Foss Field by 9 a.m.
