November 13, 2008
Pacific Lutheran is set to host the second annual Pacific Northwest Lutheran Invitational basketball tournament, sponsored by Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 28-29, in Olson Auditorium.
The Thanksgiving weekend men’s and women’s tournament will draw a handful of Lutheran college teams from the Midwest, as well as the Lutes and last year’s tournament host, Concordia (Ore.). The women’s field consists of Pacific Lutheran, Concordia (Ore.), Wartburg (Iowa) and Finlandia (Mich.), and the men’s field is made up of Pacific Lutheran, Concordia (Ore.), Wittenberg (Ohio) and Concordia (Minn.).
A total of four games will be played consecutively both days, with the first game starting at 2 p.m. and the last game at 8 p.m.
Tournament teams will also work cooperatively with Children of the Nations, a non-profit organization that minister in various countries to rescue and raise children that will transform their nations. Part of raising these children is assuring that they have a nutritious and adequate food supply. Team members from all eight teams will work 30-minute shifts on Saturday morning and afternoon packaging meals consisting of rice, lentils, fortified chicken powder and seasoning, for Children of the Nations to ship to children overseas.
Joining the tournament teams in packaging the food items will be the Mt. Rainier and West Pierce County chapters of Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, and Concordia Lutheran School and Mt. Rainier High School staff and students. The goal is to package at least 16,000 meals during a four-hour period.
Individuals interested in helping package the meals for Children of the Nations are welcome and can receive more information on how they can participate by calling 253-535- 7367.
