PLU students are needed for mentor programs

November 06, 2008

The Pierce County Big Brothers and Big Sisters program is in dire need of volunteers for their mentoring programs.

Approximately 180 children in the county are waiting for a mentor. The organization would like to invite PLU students to volunteer whatever time they have.

Two of the mentoring programs in need are Community-Based Mentoring and School-Based Mentoring.

School-Based Mentoring includes dedicating a few hours a month working with children at local elementary schools. The volunteer time is all at the school, scheduled and an easy opportunity for college students without a vehicle to make a difference.

Community-Based Mentoring includes taking as little as two to four times a month to mentor a local youth and enjoy fun activities. The schedule for that program is flexible.

To join one of the programs contact Pierce Big Brothers and Big Sisters at 253-396-9630 or go to www.bbbsps.org search for the region and fill out a short application.

The organization is looking to pair mentors with youths who have common interests. Accepted applicants will undergo a 30 to 45 minute interview to find the best fit.
