Lock-Down Drills in November 2008
November 03, 2008
Pacific Lutheran University will be conducting a campus-wide emergency lock-down drill during the week of November 3-7. This is a critically important drill. Your participation and cooperation are essential. The drill will be initiated by Campus Safety and notification of a lock down will be issued via emergency text message, phone trees, and word-of-mouth. Please review the following protocols and respond as instructed during the exercises. The exercises will be evaluated and emergency procedures will be refined accordingly.
The drill is over when the emergency building coordinator (EBC),
resident hall staff, and/or those administering the drill notify
occupants that it is over.
Emergency Building Coordinators (EBC) in every building have created lock down plans, have keys, and are trained to facilitate a lock down during business hours. Resident Directors have done the same for Residence Halls and can respond 24/7. Buildings whose entrances are on the card access network will be locked remotely.
*Safety During the Drill*
Always communicate, “This is a drill.” when carrying out the drill. If a real event happens during the exercise, be sure to communicate to others and Campus Safety, “This is a real emergency.” There will be no live action “shooters” for the drill.
PROTOCOLS
*If You Lock Down*
Campus Safety or other emergency responders will initiate a lock down of buildings when there is a perceived imminent threat of danger to occupants and a lock down would be effective.
1. Call 535-7911, if you discover a threat.
2. Notify those around you and those outside the building.
3. Check to ensure exit doors are shut. Seek safety inside your room, a friend’s room, an office, a classroom, a meeting room, bathroom, or closet. Lock or block doors and windows (clear pathways after the drill).
4. Get out of the line of sight and line of fire. Get down on the floor, away from windows, and close shades, if possible.
5. Be quiet. Do not draw attention to yourself.
6. Do not exit the building when a fire alarm sounds unless you have reason to believe that there is in fact a fire in the building or you have been advised to evacuate by Campus Safety or another emergency responder.
7. Be ready to move, if your position becomes too dangerous. Be aware of possible escape routes.
*If You Do Not Lock Down*
If you are outside or the threatening person is too close, you must decide the best course of action for your own safety.
- Hide. Go inside the nearest building. Use bushes, trees, walls, and benches for cover.
- Run. If you believe you can safely make it out of the area, run. Do not run in a straight line. Keep trees, garbage cans, buildings, and cars, between you and the hostile person.
- Play Dead. If the intruder is causing death or physical injury to others and you are unable to run or hide, play dead.
- Fight. If you must, fight back. This is dangerous, but it could be your last option.
- If Caught. If you are caught and cannot fight back, obey all commands of the hostile person and law enforcement. Avoid eye contact.
*When Faced With an Imminent Threat of Violence*
*Each Person Must be Responsible for His or Her Own Safety *
