Former Regent, Melvin Knudson, passes on Oct. 30

On Oct. 30, former Regent Melvin R. Knudson passed away. Knudson served on the PLU Board of Regent from 1969-1986 and was the chair from 1977-1981.
His son, Mark Knudson, is a current Board of Regent member.
Mel was born on Oct. 27, 1917 in Libby, Mont. and raised in Selbu, Norway. He served four years as a paratrooper with the 503rd Regimental Combat Team in the South Pacific theatre and earned the rank of Lt. Colonel during WWII, one of the youngest to do so.
As head of research and development for the St. Regis Paper Company, Mel became one of the first green advocates, urging the full use of every tree harvested.
