Ice and snow? Take it slow

October 30, 2008

Pacific Lutheran University wants to make sure that all students are safe and responsible winter drivers now that the temperature is dropping outside. A brochure of tips on safe winter driving has just been released and is being distributed around campus.

Among the most important tips offered is a list of things to check on your vehicle before driving in winter weather. These items include windshield wipers, tires, brakes, lights, battery, radiator, chains, belts/hoses, exhaust/fuel/ignition, heater/defroster, thermostat, fluid levels, and fuel level. Checking vehicles for safety before driving can prevent unexpected situations on the road.

Some of the general tips provided in the pamphlet advise drivers to: travel in winter weather only when necessary, check conditions before leaving home, share their itinerary with others, turn off cruise control, use headlights for greater visibility, reduce speed, and perhaps most importantly, buckle up.

There are also tips on what to do if your vehicle gets stuck in the snow, how to properly install chains, things to carry in the car, and what to do if you become stranded.

Additionally, drivers may obtain road condition information by going to www.wsdot.wa.gov/ or www.wsdot.wa.gov/small/ (for PDAs and cell phones). By phone, drivers can dial 511 for Washington driving information or dial (253) 535-7441 to reach Pacific Lutheran University’s hotline.
