Forum and Family Business Awards recognize the best of the Northwest

October 30, 2008

“Being Competitive in Tough Times,” the theme of the family business forum being presented at the Seattle Marriott Waterfront hotel, hits home with many contemporary business owners. With the current economic situation, businesses are doing all they can to simply stay alive.

The forum will take place on Nov.14 at 8:30 a.m. Teresa Russell, chairperson of West Coast Paper, will deliver a keynote address, followed by a discussion led by northwest family business leaders. Tomoko Moriguchi Matsuno, CEO of Uwayujimaya, and Steve Leob, CEO of Alaska Distributors, Inc. will be featured speakers during the panel discussion. To wrap up the forum, executive coach and leadership training consultant Douglas McKenna will present on how to effectively lead and direct family firms.

The 15th Annual Best in the Northwest Family Business Awards will follow the forum, recognizing all of the finalists and winners in three categories: Small Business (fewer than 50 employees), Medium Business (50 to 250 employees) and Heritage Business (more than 50 years).

The nominees in the Small Business category are as follows: Bob Bandy and Son, Coffee Fest, Hunnex and Shoemaker, Inc., Prestige Custom Builders, Roman Meal Company, Star Moving Systems and Vernon & Associates Court Reporters.

In the Medium Business category, Ferrill’s Auto Parts, Inc. dba Pull A Part, Medosweet Farms, Inc. and Northwest Door, Inc. all received nominations.

Three of the Small Business nominees also received nominations in the Heritage category. These companies were Bob Bandy and Son, Roman Meal Company and Star Moving Systems.

This event is presented by the Family Enterprise Institute at PLU and is sponsored by KeyBank, Laird Norton Tyee, MCM and Puget Sound Business Journal.

Tickets cost $70 per person and include the forum, discussions and lunch. Participants are asked to register by Nov. 11, but may register late until Nov. 14.
