Powell and Heller Conference starts today with Raphael Lemkin Lecture

October 16, 2008

Alan Steinweis, the Hyman Rosenberg Professor of Modern European History and Judiac Studies at the University of Nebraska will be visiting Pacific Lutheran University today, Oct. 20, to present the eighth annual Raphael Lemkin Lecture.

This year’s lecture is entitled “Kristallnacht: Myths and Realities” and focuses on the importance of teaching the lessons learned from the Holocaust. The lecture will be presented in the Scandinavian Cultural Center in the University Center at 7 p.m.

The lecture series itself is named for Raphael Lemkin, an author, international lawyer and Polish Jew who coined the term “genocide” and worked for the passage of the United Nations genocide convention.

Anyone who is unable to attend the lecture may listen to it in real-time on Lutecast, and may tune in live at 6:45 p.m.

Tuesday, Oct. 21 brings the second annual Powell and Heller Family Conference in Support of Holocaust Education. These conference sessions will also be held in the Scandinavian Cultural Center from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The final session will move to the Regency Room from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Sponsored by the Powell and Heller families, the conference is committed to teaching the lessons of the Holocaust to people of all races and religious beliefs in the Pacific Northwest, in order to prevent its recurrence and foster mutual understanding and respect. It honors the millions who lost their lives in the Holocaust and survivors John and Georgette Heller, parents of Harry Heller and Carol Powell Heller.

The conference is intended for educators interested in teaching the Holocaust at the high school, community college or university level. It is also free and open to the public.
