Blessing of the bikes
October 11, 2008

Living three minutes from campus means that senior Eric Pfaff walks rather than riding a bike to PLU.
However, for all the campus staff and students who still pedal to the university, it never hurts to ask that God bless the bikers.
So he did ask for a blessing early this month, at a chapel especially dedicated the protection of the PLU bike commuters. They can use all the help they can get, braving rain, wind and obnoxious drivers.
Pfaff, an environmental studies and English major, asked during his short homily for God to give everyone the wisdom to make sustainable choices. Then about 30 students and staff, half with their bikes, came forward for the blessing.
Pfaff says he doesn’t really know how many people bike to campus, but the number seems to be growing.
“Over the last four years, I’ve seen the bike racks in front of the UC get more and more use,” he said. “Sometimes people are chaining them up to picnic tables because all the bike racks are full.”
Pfaff is still pursing his idea of creating a bike co-op on campus, and is currently working out the details.
