Documentary looks at war and women

October 03, 2008

Do women and war mix?

Five army women were sent into direct ground combat during the combat mission “Lioness” despite a policy that prevents them from doing so. Through harrowing personal stories, these women share their experiences in Iraq as well as their lives back home.

Pacific Lutheran University will host a free premiere screening of “LIONESS” before the film debuts on broadcast television as part of an Independent Television Service (ITVS) series airing on PBS. Local viewing of this intriguing documentary is sponsored by PLU’s MediaLab and ITVS Community Cinema Tacoma.

The hour-long documentary will be shown in Room 100 of PLU’s Ingram Hall at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 16. An insightful discussion led by Maj. Robert Riedel, Cpt. Joy Young and Msg. Paul Toms from PLU’s ROTC will follow.

Pacific Lutheran University’s MediaLab, a student-led organization within PLU’s School of Arts & Communication, is hosting the ITVS documentary “Lioness” this month.

ITVS Community Cinema, the national outreach program of the Independent Television Service (ITVS), works to bring communities together and connect them with information, resources and opportunities for education, engagement and positive change. ITVS Community makes public broadcasting into a powerful resource for individuals, communities and organizations working on key social issues around the country.
