Chemistry, sci-fi lecture planned this week

September 19, 2008

Chemistry professor Tom Holme, of Iowa State University, will speak Wednesday on how science influences science fiction, and visa versa, at the Morken Center for Learning and Technology, Room 103. The lecture begins at 7:30 p.m.

Titled "Chemistry, Society and Science Fiction," Holme’s lecture will look at how science fiction has long served as a vehicle by which non-scientists encounter science topics. The use of science fiction as an organizing theme has a long history for classes for non-science majors. This talk will reflect on past efforts and emphasizes the methods used by the speaker in his own "Chemistry and Science Fiction" course.

Current trends in science background for science fiction stories will be noted and ways to introduce both a scientific and literature perspective will be addressed. A discussion of how science fiction tends to extrapolate from sound chemical principles to more speculative fiction will provide opportunities for audience participation.

A no-host dinner with the speaker for the first 20 people who RSVP will occur at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Lieu's Restaurant near Garfield Street in Parkland. To RSVP, contact Rose Lloyd at llordrm@plu.edu or 253-535-7530 by 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23. The first eight undergrad or graduate students who RSVP will receive a $10 credit toward the meal cost.

This event sponsored by the Puget Sound Section of the American Chemical Society and hosted by the PLU Chemistry Department.
