Youth symphony passes baton

The Maple Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra has a new conductor. As an orchestra teacher in Bethel School District, alumna April Whyte was prepared for the job. The recently formed group has already grown from eight members to 25 since its first year of existence. As the group’s leader Whyte said, “Our hope is to introduce as many students as possible to a great orchestra experience.”

Alumna Kathi Rivers Shannon has learned that researching a novel can take you to fun and scary places. After graduating with an MFA in creative writing, Rivers-Shannon explored her ancestors homestead site in Waterville. Her adventure provided background inspiration for her recently finished novel titled “Seven Trees.”

Alumna Tammy Schultz has learned to love football. After marrying her husband John, a former PLU player, football became a regular part of her life. As John coached during their 28 years of marriage, Tammy raised her family with the team.
