KPLU tackles presidential election with series, forum

August 28, 2008

KPLU’s nine-part election series, “Looking Back to Look Forward,” examines many of the issues important to Americans for November’s presidential election.

The series began Sept. 2 and will air every Tuesday through Oct. 28 on KPLU’s “Morning Edition” and “All Things Considered.” On Monday, Nov. 3, the station will air a 90-minute election series special that replays all nine segments.

The series uses history to examine how past presidents tackled important issues and compares their actions with the promises of today’s presidential nominees. KPLU News will look at the following issues: political rhetoric, health care reform, the environment, the economy, immigration, diversity/identity politics of the president, science and technology, social safety nets, and war.

Stories incorporate archival tape from past presidents, Sens. John McCain and Barack Obama, and from diverse members of the community who participated in roundtable discussions about the topics. Photographs, slideshows and series transcripts will be available on KPLU’s Web site.

In conjunction with the election series, KPLU will host a community forum on Wednesday, Sept. 10 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Seattle’s Museum of History and Industry, located at McCurdy Park at 2700 24th Ave. E.

Moderated by NPR news analyst Juan Williams, the event consists of a community discussion of the economy, health care reform and diversity/identity politics of the president.

The event is free but tickets are required for admission. Printable tickets are available beginning Aug. 21 at KPLU’s Web site.
