CarLess Commute campaign successful
August 05, 2008
A record number of PLU employees participated the 2008 CarLess Commute campaign, held from June 2 to 15.
PLU employees were encouraged to avoid driving their own car in their commute to campus and daily errands, instead using alternative forms of transportation, such as biking and walking. Ann Tolo, administrative associate in the natural sciences division, won four tickets to Northwest Trek for her participation.
In all, the campaign racked up 406,100 total commute/leisure destination miles from the 1,585 participants. That translates into 20,305 gallons of fuel saved, based on a vehicle going 20 miles per gallon, and $85,281 in gas savings, based on the local gas rate at the time of $4.20. The campaign resulted in saving the environment from 13.4 tons of air pollution, based on 33 tons per million miles.
Human Resource Services offers a transit pass benefit to employees and students who use alternative forms of transportation to commute to campus. Alternative transportation forms include mass transit, like riding the bus or train, carpooling, riding a bike, walking or working from home periodically.
Employees interested in trying an alternative commute mode can visit the Commute Smart Web site or contact Gretchen Howell, university transportation coordinator, at ext. 7329.
