PLU’s partner institution in China responds to quake
May 22, 2008
Funds have been set up around Puget Sound to support disaster relief efforts in China after a 7.9-magnitude earthquake racked the country’s Sichuan Province on May 12.
PLU’s partner institution, Sichuan University, is located in the provincial capital of Chengdu, just south of the quake’s epicenter. Sichuan University has established a relief fund for students affected by the disaster, and PLU contributed to it, said Neal Sobania, director of the Wang Center for International Programs.
The two universities have been partner institutions for 25 years. Each fall, PLU students study in China, and students from Sichuan regularly enroll at PLU. Currently, 10 Chinese students are studying at PLU, the university’s visiting Fulbright Scholar is from Chengdu, and one PLU student is studying in China. The PLU student and the families of the Chinese students are safe. The Chinese students have already raised $2,700 for relief efforts.
For individuals wishing to contribute to the relief effort, Sobania suggests making donations to area organizations responding to the crisis. These include the Red Cross, World Vision and the University Place Sisters Cities Association, which partnered with Lakewood, Steilacoom and DuPont to assist University Place’s sister city, Jiang You.
Donations can be made at any Wells Fargo Bank branch in Washington to the account of University Place Sister Cities Association, earmarked for “China Earthquake Relief Fund;” or during business hours at the city halls for University Place, Lakewood and DuPont and at Steilacoom’s Public Works Department.
