Celebrate PLU’s Nordic roots
May 09, 2008
Celebrate Norway’s national holiday Syttende Mai on May 17 at 9 a.m. in Red Square.
Syttende Mai, which translates to the 17th of May, commemorates the signing of Norway’s constitution in 1814 and was first celebrated in 1836. PLU’s celebration includes a brief ceremony and the singing the Norwegian national anthem while raising the Norwegian flag. Refreshments will be served.
The signing of the constitution in 1814 marked the end of Norway’s 400-year-union with Denmark. The country then entered into a loose union with Sweden, which was dissolved peacefully in 1905.
