Counterpoint to Presidential Careerism
Bill Frame’s work as PLU’s chief financial officer in the early 1990s serves as an alternative to the increasingly corporate environment of higher education administration. Frame’s work to create a strategic plan at PLU led him to study the university’s history and Martin Luther’s definition of vocation. Luther’s definition of vocation teaches there is a spiritual purpose in everyday life, including one’s occupation.

PLU faculty artist illustrates death and redemption
Craig Cornwall, professor of art, presented the exhibit “Seven Deadly Sins, One Saint.” The display featured two parts: stark graphite drawings illustrating the seven sins and brighter paintings depicting St. Joseph and his coat of many colors.

Strains and Joys Color Mergers Between Libraries
PLU is cited for successfully merging the library and information technology services in 1996. Chris Ferguson, associate provost for information and technology services, said the benefits of integrating the two at PLU included the IT staff adopting the librarians approach to customer service, and the librarians learning from the IT staff’s use of technology.

Thousands gather for Tacoma’s 20th Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration
Melannie Cunningham, associate director of admission and coordinator of multicultural recruitment, was honored with a community service award at the recent Martin Luther King Jr. celebration. Cunningham has worked on the celebration since it began 20 years ago. The event also featured a performance by alumna Crystal Aiken, winner of Black Entertainment Television’s “Sunday Best.”

KPLU breaks ground on new broadcast center
KPLU broke ground on the Martin J. Neeb Center, scheduled to open in 2009. The facility will expand the station’s capacity to over 13,000 square feet and includes environmentally stable record storage. It will likely qualify for a gold rating from the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program.
