Flute ensemble performs in state capitol

Members of the PLU’s Sølvvinden Flute Ensemble performed in the Washington state capitol rotunda in Olympia April 26.

The concert was a joint performance with members of the Bellevue Youth Symphony Flute Ensemble. PLU music lecturer Jennifer Rhyne and PLU alum Sandra Saathoff directed.

According to Rhyne, the PLU ensemble has performed in the capitol in the past, though it’s been several years since the last concert. The rotunda provides unique acoustics, especially for flute choirs, she added.

“It’s a really special place to play because of the acoustics of the rotunda,” she said. “It’s pretty reverberant.”

PLU’s flute ensemble is comprised of nearly a dozen student flutists. The ensemble plays a range of flute instruments, from the regular concert flute to alto and bass flutes and piccolos.

“It’s a real choir in the sense that you have high voices, low voices and everything in between,” Rhyne said.

The flute ensembles next performance is Wednesday, May 14 at 8 p.m. in Lagerquist Concert Hall. It features guest artist and music lecturer Francine Peterson as a bassoon soloist.

The seven students who performed at the capitol are Natasha Gilman, Melissa Fitzgerald, Luxi Salmon, Luke Hung, Allison Cambronne, Katie Bray and Lorna Rodriguez.
