Film recounts family's escape from Khmer Rouge
May 09, 2008
MediaLab will host a premiere screening of the documentary film “New Year Baby” on Thursday, May 15 at 7 p.m. in room 100 of Ingram Hall.
The story recounts the return of a young woman to her native Cambodia, where she learns the truth about her roots. Born on Cambodian New Year in a Thai refugee camp, filmmaker Socheata Poeuv’s parents never told her how she got there. “New Year Baby” is her personal documentary, one that searches for the truth about how her family survived the Khmer Rouge genocide and immigrated to the United States, and why they buried the truth for so long.
The 57-minute film concludes a monthly series that previewed Independent Television Service (ITVS) documentaries before they were broadcast on PBS-member stations across the country.
The event is free and open to the public. It is presented by ITVS Community Cinema Tacoma, KCTS-TV in Seattle and PLU’s MediaLab, a student-led organization within the School of Arts and Communication.
