KPLU “School of Jazz” releases fourth CD
May 02, 2008
Some of Western Washington’s finest high school bands and jazz professionals are showcased on the “KPLU School of Jazz-Volume 4” CD that will be available May 13.
In 2005, KPLU developed a mentoring program with a grant from Boeing to further support music education in public schools. The program involved 11 local jazz professionals and bands from 10 high schools and one middle school. The partnership yielded the CD, “KPLU School of Jazz.”
In subsequent years, the project focused exclusively on high school jazz bands and produced 2006’s Volume 2 and 2007’s Volume 3. This year’s CD features songs by Quincy Jones, Dizzy Gillespie, Billy Strayhorn, Duke Ellington and Lance Buller. It is available at local retail outlets and at each of the participating high schools for $12.00. All proceeds go toward local music education programs.
High schools featured on this year’s CD include Stadium High School, North Thurston High School, Kentridge High School, Roosevelt High School, Squalicum High School, Mercer Island High School, Newport High School, Shorewood High School, Mountlake Terrace High School, Edmonds Woodway High School, Garfield High School and South Whidbey High School.
Guest jazz artists include: Lance Buller, Thomas Marriott, Darren Motamedy, David Marriott, Steve Korn, Greg Williamson, Jovino Santos Neto, Tracy Knoop, Neil Welch, Scot Ranney, Stuart MacDonald and Andy Omdahl.
The second, third and fourth volumes of “KPLU School of Jazz” can be checked out through the King County Library System’s catalog, available online at www.kcls.org. Songs from newest CD can also be accessed for downloading.
