The tattered and frayed edges, and the washed out reds and blues are no more. The Norwegian flag that flies in Red Square has been replaced.

The new larger and brighter version took up its post at noon last Thursday, May 1 in a brief ceremony attended by the Norwegian Ambassador to the United States, Wegger Chr. Strommen. The flag was a gift from Kim Nesselquist ‘83, Norway consul, who flew the flag in from Oslo on a 10-hour flight.

“It was pretty tired,” Nesselquist said of the former flag. “With the 17th of May coming up, it was time (to replace it).”

The 17th of May, or Syttende Mai as its called in Norwegian, marks the day Norway’s constitution was signed in 1814 in the town of Eidsvoll. It marked the end of Norway’s 400-year union with Denmark.

PLU celebrates the event each year with a brief ceremony that includes singing the Norwegian national anthem while raising the Norwegian flag in Red Square.
