Students recognized for volunteering, service work

Four students were recognized for their community service and volunteer activities with scholarship awards at the Celebration of Service last Wednesday.
Hosted by the Volunteer Center and the Center for Public Service, the annual event recognized students, faculty and staff nominated for their service work. Nominees included S.A.P.E.T., the Garden Club, Second Wind and the New Orleans 2008 Alternative Spring Break group, as well as individual students nominated by peers and community members.
The four students who received awards were Katie Bray, Amy Blauman, Kelly Ryan and Autumn Leir.
Bray received the Gladys Mortvedt Volunteer Service Award for her involvement in planning Campus Ministry’s 2007 alternative spring break trip to Spokane that worked with Habitat for Humanity. She was also recognized for her work organizing dinners at Peace Lutheran Church that includes finding volunteers, buying food and working in the kitchen.
The LIFE PLU Service Award was awarded to Blauman and Ryan.
As co-president of Circle K, a campus service club sponsored by the Kiwanis Club, Blauman has organized club programs, fostered new community partnerships and coordinated the first international Circle K trip.
Ryan is the University Congregation missions coordinator, and he was nominated for his deep commitment to service and the church, organizing the spring break trip to New Orleans and gathering donations of $1,000 for Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Orleans.
The final scholarship recipient was Leir, who was awarded the Fosness Memorial Leadership Award for of her dedication to Christ and serving others. Along with being a member of the student group Progress and community involvement coordinator for the Residence Hall Council, Leir is a mathlete coach, teaches at a Christian Montessori preschool and is a camp counselor through Grace Community Church.
