Interactive art display wraps up this week

April 18, 2008

Two exhibits wrap up this week at the University and Wekell galleries.

The revival of tattoo art and the tattoos of PLU students are highlighted in the University Gallery, while the Wekell houses a tribute to former art professor Lawry Gold, who passed away in 2006.

Titled “Wearing My Art on My Sleeve: Tattoo Art Revival,” the University Gallery exhibit connects the pure visual artistry of tattoo illustrations with the social, political, spiritual and personal contexts carried by that same picture when it’s expressed on the body.

The show features the tattoos of local artists and PLU students, with each explaining the reasons behind their choice to get inked. Descriptions of the history and meaning of tattoo art are found in binders, and a bulletin board invites others to share their body art.

The Wekell Gallery show is titled “Pure Gold: Students and Friends of Lawry Gold.” Former students suggested the display as a way to remember and celebrate Gold’s life.

The exhibit features the work of Gold’s former students and colleagues, as well as Gold’s own art pieces. Visitors are encouraged to document their memories of Gold and pin them up on the gallery’s one empty wall. Paper, markers and pins are provided.

Both exhibits run through April 25. The galleries are open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
