Lives of service

In the clean white kitchen of Peace Lutheran Community Center, 10 PLU students set to work preparing a hot evening meal for those in need. That evening, they served dinner to 62 people.

“Through experiences such as these, it really makes you realize just how blessed you are,” said student Katie Bray. “It’s a great reminder to not take something as simple as a hot meal and a bed to sleep in for granted.”

The meal preparation is an annual volunteer opportunity organized by Campus Ministry and University Congregation in October and April. During these two months, the community center provides hot meals every week night that are provided by church groups in the area. PLU serves one day of each month, Bray said.

The feeding program is supported by Peace Lutheran Church and provides more than 10,000 meals a year to 500 people. Along with the feeding program, the church offers tutoring, counseling and neighborhood support services. The programs provided by the church are needed and appreciated by the populations served, Bray said.
