Oaxacan theologian to discuss “inculturated” gospel

April 11, 2008

Oaxacan theologian and priest Father Manuel Arias Montes will deliver a lecture on Thursday, April 24 at 7 p.m. in the Scandinavian Cultural Center.

His lecture is titled “Y la palabra de Dios se hizo indio/And the Word of God Was Made Indian: The Inculturated Gospel Among Indigenous Communities in Mexico.”

Montes identifies as a Mixtec Oaxacan. “Mixtec” describes the indigenous people who inhabit Oaxaca, a Mexican state. Montes has spent several years in pastoral work for the Archdiocese of Oaxaca, serving as theologian and pastor for the indigenous poor.

Montes has lectured throughout Europe and Latin America, and most of his presentations focus on his concept of the inculturated gospel in native communities in Latin America. Most notably, he spoke at the “Latin America: Religion and Historiography” symposium in Germany, and the German-Latin American seminar on “Youth, Culture and Church” in Bolivia.

Ordained in 1976, Montes studied philosophy and theology at the Seminario Regional del Sureste in Tehuacán, Puebla. He earned a master’s in dogmatic theology from the Gregorian University in Rome and a doctorate in theology from the University of Tubingen in Germany.

The lecture is sponsored by the languages and literatures and religion departments, the Global Studies Program, Diversity Center and the Wang Center for International Programs. It is free and open to the public.
