“Hebrew Idol 2008” voting ends Friday
April 04, 2008
Students have until Friday, April 11 to vote for their favorite video in the “Hebrew Idol 2008” competition.
Masterminded by assistant religion professor Tony Finitsis, the contest – another PLU twist on Fox’s popular singing series “American Idol” – stems from the final project in Finitsis’ “Religion and Literature of the Old Testament” course.
Each term, groups are assigned to reflect on the contemporary relevance of the Hebrew Bible and re-tell a biblical story set in modern times. Many make videos of their interpretation. In March, Finitsis posted the top 11 online, as “contestants” for the first Hebrew Idol competition and invited students to vote for their favorite.
The three videos with the most votes will compete live on April 17 for a panel of “celebrity judges,” members of the PLU Theological Society dressed as their favorite biblical character. The judges will select the winner of Hebrew Idol 2008, who will receive an unnamed prize.
For more information about the competition, and to view the videos, visit the Hebrew Idol Web site.
