Education prof elected to international association

April 04, 2008

Assistant professor of education Vidya Thirumurthy was recently elected to a three-year term as secretary of the Association for Childhood Education International (ACEI).

In the position, Thirumurthy’s goals include increasing ACEI membership worldwide and providing more professional development opportunities to members from outside the United States.

A member since 1994, Thirumurthy has served the organization in a number of capacities. She established the PLU ACEI student branch and is the adviser; served on the Infancy/Early Childhood Committee; chaired the International/Intercultural Committee; and is currently a member of the Publications Committee.

Thirumurthy has written several articles for Childhood Education, the official journal of the organization, and for The ACEI Activist. She is a frequent presenter at ACEI Annual Conferences, most recently presenting “How Fluent Are Teachers in Designing Culturally Responsive Curriculum?” at the 2007 annual conference. Thirumurthy also reviews proposal submissions for organization’s annual conferences and the 2008 Moscow World Conference.

The Association for Childhood Education International is the oldest professional organization in the world dedicated to the development of the whole child, from birth to early adolescence. Founded in 1892, it is an organization of teachers, teacher educators and parents with the primary purpose to promote the inherent rights, education and well being of children in the home, school and community.
