Seminar works to support student affairs leaders
March 27, 2008
The first participants in the Student Life Leadership Development Seminar were recognized at a lunch in March.
The seminar was designed to support and retain the recent influx of student affairs professionals to the university and the Division of Student Life.
Designed for the unique needs of mid-management professionals, the curriculum included a variety of topics, from leadership styles and student learning to trends in higher education, Lutheran higher education and organizational leadership.
The seminar broadened the participants’ understanding of leadership, the culture of higher education and student affairs, and the history, vision and Lutheran roots of PLU. The group met once a month from August to March. Led by Laura Majovski, vice president for student life, the sessions featured guest facilitators from across campus.
Nominated by their director, participants were selected by Majovski. They included: Katherine Bourdonnay, assistant director of the Academic Assistance Center; Jeff Wilgus, assistant director of Campus Safety; Lace Smith, program coordinator of Student Involvement and Leadership; Joey Weber, resident director of Foss and Pflueger; Lizz Barton, psychologist in the Counseling Center; Elise Erickson, music and worship coordinator in Campus Ministry; Angie Hambrick, associate director of multicultural affairs in SIL; Heather Kreier, cross country and track head coach; and Steve Dickerson, men’s basketball head coach.
