Seattle Opera’s Young Artist Opera features PLU student

March 27, 2008

PLU student Noah Baetge is one of twelve Young Artists appearing in the Seattle Opera’s Young Artist Opera.

The annual production features six performances of two classic one-act operas, Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi” and Ravel’s “Enchanted Child (L’enfant et les sortileges).” It opened March 28 at the Theatre at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue.

This is Baetge’s second season with the Seattle Opera Young Artists Program. Last year, he sang Fenton in Verdi’s “Falstaff” and Don José in the touring production of Peter Brook/Bizet’s “Tragedy of Carmen.” He also sang two roles on the company’s mainstage.

Baetge is pursuing a Bachelor of Music at PLU. He has been a member of Tacoma Opera’s Young Artists Showcase and placed first at the 2006 district-level Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.

The Young Artists Program attracts more than 600 applications annually, but only ten to twelve singers are selected for each season. Singers range in age from 20 to 30 years old, and most have completed their college training and are embarking on professional careers in opera. Many go on from the program to appear on the Seattle Opera mainstage and in opera houses throughout North America and Europe.

The production’s remaining performances are April 4 and 5 at 7:30 p.m. and April 6 at 2 p.m. Tickets are $15 for students and $35 for adults. For more information, contact the ticket office at 206-389-7676 or visit the Seattle Opera’s Web site.
