Recovery efforts in the Big Easy

March 27, 2008

Fifteen students and three staff members traveled back to New Orleans to continue the recovery effort in a city still struggling to rebuild nearly three years after Hurricane Katrina devastated it.

Organized by Campus Ministry and sponsored by University Congregation, the group volunteered through Lutheran Disaster Response in New Orleans. The group stayed in volunteer lodging at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, which was hit hard by the flooding and reopened on Easter 2006.

The group didn’t know what to expect or where they would be working when they hopped on a plane bound for the Big Easy. They were quickly put to work, gutting and beginning the clean-up process in some homes and putting the finishing touches on others.

Working in the homes, the students talked with hurricane survivors and heard their harrowing stories. The group recorded their thoughts and experiences and posted photos to the New Orleans’ blog.

“The people of New Orleans are generous in their sharing, and I am constantly amazed by their high spirits,” wrote student Allison Cambronne.
