Election yields leaders

Election yields leaders

Students elected junior John de Mars to be their student-government president and junior Amy Spieker as ASPLU vice president during the general election last Wednesday and Thursday.

The executives-elect have three main goals for next year. They include strengthening communication and consistency internally, creating a collaborative and supportive environment for student leaders and their organizations, and developing opportunities for students to experience the world through efforts of sustainability, activism and awareness.

“We want to continue the communication between ASPLU and clubs and organizations, and make a tighter network of student leaders on campus,” de Mars said.

Spieker added that they want to provide more opportunities for students from other countries or those who study away to share their experiences. She points to the success of last year’s World Conversations, where students were able to talk about and showcase the customs of countries they’d visited or hailed from.

Both de Mars and Spieker have been active on campus, serving in ASPLU, as resident assistants and on campus athletic teams, among other activities. Their involvement has allowed them to learn about the workings of student government, connect with their peers and develop leadership skills.

De Mars and Spieker officially take office April 1, at which time they will begin to hire members of their executive committee.
