Fund raising events support alternative spring break trips
March 07, 2008
Fifteen students are preparing to spend spring break in New Orleans, volunteering in a city that is still struggling to rebuild more than two years after Hurricane Katrina devastated it.
Organized by Campus Ministry, the group won’t know exactly where they’ll be working until they get there. It depends on how much work was completed by the volunteer groups that came before, as each group brings an array of skills that affect how quickly projects are completed, explained Kyle Franklin, Campus Ministry program specialist.
“Whatever it is, we’re going to serve,” he said. “They will be an effective group when we’re there, they are raring to go.”
Campus Ministry is currently working to raise funds to help pay for the alternative spring break trip, which is estimated to cost about $15,000. Students going on the trip are paying $350.
The office is currently selling Brown Bear Car Wash tickets for $7 each or three tickets for $20. Tickets can be purchased in the Campus Ministry office and are valid for a year.
Building on the success of the Valentine’s Day photo-card making activity, Campus Ministry will host a similar craft project on Monday, March 17 during Lute Loop. This time, the cards will be clovers in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. It will be free to make a card, but donations are appreciated.
Additionally, the office is selling raffle tickets for 50 cents through March 18. Tickets are available after Chapel, in the residence halls from students going on the trip and in the Campus Ministry office.
The raffle drawing will be March 19. Prizes include desserts made by PLU baker Erica Fickeisen, a movie-themed basket, a collection of items from Old Lutheran.com and an Easter basket. All the prizes were donated.
Other efforts included last week’s miniature golf and raffle event, and the bookstore donating 10 percent of its March 6th sales to the trip fund.
Campus Ministry is located in the lower level of the University Center. For more information, contact the office at ext. 7464 of cmin@plu.edu.
