Fellowships help create greener campus

March 07, 2008

Students interested in furthering the sustainability effort on campus are encouraged to apply for a Sustainability Fellowship for 2008-2009. The application deadline is Friday, April 4.

The fellowships are open to students from any discipline. Students receive $3500 to research existing practices and the use of resources on campus, while also examining best practices on other college and university campuses and at facilities in the area.

Fellowship recipients are expected to propose strategies and solutions that address sustainability challenges at PLU and help identify funding agencies and opportunities for projects. Students work in collaboration with faculty and staff advisors.

Faculty and staff have submitted proposals for projects they are interested in or feel there is a need to address. These proposals have been posted online. Students can either propose their own fellowship project or opt to work on one suggested by faculty or staff.

For the next academic year, three fellowships will be awarded. Two will be funded through the provost’s office, while the third is supported by Seattle design firm Mithun. The Mithun fellow must work on a project related to the built environment. Recipients must complete their projects between June 1, 2008 and May 31, 2009.

Visit the Sustainability Committee’s Web site for more information and to access the application materials.
