Celebrating 35 years

For 35 years, the staff and tutors at the Academic Assistance Center have been helping students succeed academically. Last Thursday, the center celebrated the milestone.

“I’m very impressed at the university supporting this endeavor,” said the center’s director Leslie Foley. “The university has always stood by and supported students academically.”

At a reception in the Scandinavian Cultural Center, President Loren Anderson commended the AAC on its years of service and commitment to helping students succeed. The center represents that learning is both an individual and group activity, and a collaborative experience, he said.

“We experience here on campus on a daily basis, and particularly in the Academic Assistance Center, the joy that learning is a service to others and a gift to all of us,” Anderson said.

The center offers a wide array of services free of charge to all registered students. These include one-on-one peer tutoring, test review, language conversation groups and labs in math, geosciences, computer science, biology and chemistry.

It also provides students with study tips and handouts on everything from test anxiety to time management. For particularly difficult introductory courses in biology and chemistry, the center offers supplemental instruction.

The center is committed to having students help students, which fits hand-in-hand with the university’s mission of service to others, said assistant director Katherine Bourdonnay.

“Our tutors are into living that part of the mission right now,” she said.

Peer tutors are selected through a rigorous hiring process. Tutors must maintain a 3.3 grade point average in their area of specialization and be recommended or approved by faculty members in that department. Tutors undergo intensive training and participate in continuing education while on staff.

The center is accredited by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Peer tutors who meet the requirements in hours of training and tutoring can be certified as Level I or Level II tutors by the CRLA.

The center is located in room 124 of Mordvedt Library. For more information, contact the center at ext. 7518 or learningctr@plu.edu.
