Faculty concert celebrates hope and love

February 08, 2008

On Wednesday, Feb. 12, PLU faculty member and soprano Janeanne Houston brings her “Songs of Hope…and Love” to campus.

The concert culminates the recital’s October 2007 tour of New York state, which included partaking in the Daniel Pearl World Music Days, an annual concert inspired by the life and work of late journalist Daniel Pearl. The on campus performance is at 8 p.m. in Lagerquist Concert Hall.

Houston will be joined on stage by oboist Shannon Spicciati, violinist Svend Ronning, and pianists Robert Jorgensen and Sheila Bristow.

The performance is dedicated to the memory of James Holloway, a former faculty member tragically killed on the PLU campus in 2001. The CD “So Great a Joy,” which includes Holloway’s composition “Love is His Name,” will be on sale. All the proceeds will be donated to PLU’s Holloway Scholarship Fund.

The concert marks the world premiere of “Fragments: Three Songs of Hope” by PLU composer Gregory Youtz, and the West Coast premiere of “Cumming’s Suite,” a song cycle by North Carolina composer Dan Locklair.

Other featured composers include Seattle’s Carol Sams, Stephen Paulus, Hilary Tann and J. Mark Scearce. The concert also includes song by Lee Hoiby, Lori Laitman and Simon Sargon.
