Pierce County READS program culminates on campus

February 01, 2008

The first Pierce County READS event officially kicked off Feb. 3.

The county-wide event encourages community members to read the same book, the best-selling “The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” by international award-winning author Alexander McCall Smith. From Feb. 3 through April 26, community members are invited to participate in free programs and join community groups to discuss the book.

McCall Smith will visit PLU on April 26 at 7 p.m. The event, which includes a book signing, is free and open to the public.

“Pierce County READS brings the community together where everybody at one time, reads, talks about and shares the same book,” said Neel Parikh, executive director of Pierce County Library. “The goal of Pierce County READS is to result in thousands of people reading, discussing and enjoying the same book, and coming together as a community.”

“The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency” is an eight-book series, with a ninth book expected in April 2008 and a TV movie on BBC television scheduled for this spring. The series has been translated into 39 languages and has sold more than 14 million copies worldwide.

Set in Botswana, Africa, the series tells the story of the leading and only female detective agency in the country. Mma Ramotswe, the central character, uses her wisdom to solve cases and people’s problems.

The event is sponsored by the Pierce County Library System and The News Tribune, and community partners that include PLU, Garfield Book Company at PLU and Associated Ministries.
